About Westlake, TX
Westlake, TX, was first settled in 1847 by Charles and Matilda Medlin. The couple moved to the area with 20 other families after fighting against flooding in the lower parts of the region along Denton Creek. In a bid for higher ground, they made their homes in what would later become Westlake. The Medlin family barn was a historic site until it was removed in 1997 due to safety concerns. The barn had quite a history. The infamous train robber Sam Bass once hid out in it, as did the notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.
In the 1950s, a Dallas attorney bought 2,000 acres of land along Highway 114, dubbing it the Circle T Ranch. The surrounding ranchers and farmers decided to incorporate the area, and Westlake was born. Westlake has survived the disannexation of Trophy Club, as well as an attempt by Ross Perot, Jr., to dissolve the Town of Westlake to make room for expanding development. A book about the town’s contentious history appropriately refers to Westlake as “The Little Town That Could.”
In the 1980’s, IBM came to Westlake and built Solana, the 1,000,000 square ft office space and multi-use business park. After IBM’s departure in the 1990’s, other businesses settled into Solana, including Sabre Corporation, Goosehead Insurance, Travelocity, Wells Fargo, Core-Mark, Verizon, Marsh & McLennan Companies, and Levi Strauss.
Today, Westlake is an upscale and affluent suburb of Fort Worth with just over 1,000 residents. It houses the corporate campuses of Fidelity Investments, Deloitte University, and the Charles Schwab Corporation. Notable Westlake residents include the Jonas Brothers, Terry Bradshaw, and numerous professional athletes and CEOs.
