Figuring out everyone’s Christmas gifts is a stressful process. Everyone needs and wants different things, but some of these gifts will only be used once and forgotten. If you want to give your children something that will be valuable for a long time, consider buying them a laptop. Laptops are useful for many things: school, work, networking, gaming, etc. It is a pricey investment, so it is worth reflecting upon and considering the different options that you have. Here are a couple of factors to consider.
What Does Your Child Need the Laptop For?
Before making the big commitment, figure out what your child needs a laptop for. Prices and features range widely, so you want to buy one that meets your child’s needs. If your child just needs a laptop for the basics (web browsing, watching videos, using office documents) you can choose a laptop that isn’t too pricey.
If it’s less than $200, the laptop is fine for very light note taking, but the internet may lack speed. A laptop that is around $500 will be fast enough for web browsing and research. If it’s around $800, the laptop will be great for photo editing and other types of design. And of course, if the laptop is $800 and above, they are suitable for more intensive tasks, such as video editing and gaming.
If your child needs a laptop for school or for work (which has already become a necessity) it’s best to invest in a pricier laptop to get the best buck for your money. It’s a great investment into your child’s future, and it will make their school/work life a lot smoother.
What Size Display Should You Buy?
Laptop displays range from 12 to 17 inches. If your child is always on the go, the best size is probably a smaller one. It’s a lot more convenient to travel around with because it can be stored away easily. If you have a child in college who isn’t involved in graphic design or video editing and the sorts, a small laptop is ideal. They will be carrying it everywhere in their backpack and the smaller it is, the less heavy it will be for them.
Larger displays are ideal for people that want to edit multimedia, or huge multitaskers that want to have more than one window open, or for gamers.
Check the Return Policy
You should be clear on the rights you have for returning a laptop. Some of the main factors include the reason for returning it, whether it was bought online or in person, and who you bought the laptop from. If it is faulty, not fit for purpose, or not as described, you have the legal right to return it. In most cases, you should be able to return the laptop within 30 days of purchasing it. If it has been more than 30 days, it may get a little more complicated.
